Lois Lowry authored an incredibly moving and important novel in Number the Stars, which tells a story that is centered around the Holocaust, arguably one of the darkest chapters of modern history. However, this story is as charming and uplifting as it is serious, as the author weaves a tale of loyalty, friendship, bravery, survival, and heroism cleverly with the help of a brilliant protagonist in Annemarie.

We chose this book because of the lessons it teaches young readers about standing up for what is right and having the courage to do what might be hard but necessary. It introduces the topic of the Holocaust without gory details and graphic imagery, but with plenty of suspense and action to keep young readers engaged. It is a tale of hope and kindness, and it is one all children should have the opportunity to experience.
